Our family's story

Traces back to the late 1800s...

Traces back to the late 1800s, when my great-grandparents—Eulalio Franco, originally from Guatemala and Estefania Yanes from El Salvador—met and eventually settled in the small Honduran village of El Naranjo. While little is known about how their paths first crossed, their decision to build a life together in this region would mark the beginning of our family’s enduring connection to coffee.

During that period, tobacco was the primary crop cultivated for trade, while coffee was grown mainly for personal use. By the 1970s, however, coffee had become the principal agricultural product in the community. My grandfather, Aquilino Yanes born in 1910, was among the pioneers who expanded coffee cultivation in El Naranjo. He established several coffee farms, later passing them on to his children—my uncles, aunts and my father—ensuring that the tradition continued through future generations.

Today, our family continues to harvest diverse coffee varieties on the same lands first cultivated by our ancestors, preserving more than a century of dedication, resilience, and love for the art of coffee growing.

Nowadays, many members of our family are associated and commercialize their coffee through Cafés Especiales La Unión Copán, a company founded and owned by our family in western Honduras. The company is proudly USDA Organic certified by Mayacert and Rainforest Alliance, reflecting our commitment to sustainable and responsible coffee production.

Over the years, our coffee farms have expanded beyond El Naranjo, reaching across the departments of Copán and Ocotepeque, where we continue to cultivate high-quality coffee in several surrounding villages. Each farm upholds the same principles instilled by our ancestors—dedication, integrity, and a profound respect for the land that has supported our family for generations.

Today, our generation carries forward the same passion for coffee that began more than a century ago. Through Yanes Coffee Co., we are proud to share our family’s heritage with the world—bridging our Honduran roots with our new home in Atlanta, Georgia.

We continue to source our beans directly from our family’s farms in Copán and Ocotepeque, where traditional methods are combined with modern practices to ensure exceptional quality and sustainability. Each bag of coffee represents more than a beverage—it tells the story of generations who have dedicated their lives to the art of cultivation, harvest, and craftsmanship.

OUR MISSION IS TO honor the work of our ancestors while creating new opportunities for the families and communities that continue to nurture these lands. From our family’s mountains in Honduras to your cup, every sip celebrates a history built on dedication, tradition, and love for coffee.
